Gradient Overlay


To achieve this effect, I selected the shadows and dark tones using 'colour range', then saved that selection. 
Whilst the selection was still selected, I used the brush tool to colour in the selection. I then deselected the selection.
I then reloaded the saved selection, added a layer mask and then proceeded to put a gradient overlay over the top of the selection and changing the opacity of the layer.
